The full body MRI is the poster child of the China medical price gap and the most misunderstood line item in any premium package.
The Numbers
In the United States, a full body study runs 2500 to 4000 dollars. In Shanghai or Beijing, the same study at a top-tier public hospital international wing typically runs 300 to 600 dollars. At private international hospitals, 800 to 1500 dollars is realistic.
Same Machines, Different System
The MRI machines are the same models from Siemens, GE, and Philips. The price gap comes from labor costs, facility overhead, and administrative burden. Chinese hospitals also run imaging centers at enormous volume.
What Full Body MRI Actually Covers
A full body MRI typically images the brain, spine, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It is a structural screen. It does not replace targeted imaging or functional tests.
When It Is Worth Paying For
Full body MRI makes sense when: you have a family history of cancer and want a broad structural baseline; you have unexplained symptoms; or you simply want maximum imaging depth in one session. For routine annual screening, low-dose CT plus ultrasound delivers more practical value per yuan.
The Caveats
Claustrophobia is a real issue. Contrast (gadolinium) is billed separately. A negative MRI is reassuring but not a guarantee.
Getting the Data
Insist on the DICOM imaging data on disc or cloud link, not just the PDF report. Your home radiologist should read the actual scan.
