Most people overbuy or underbuy a screening package, usually because the packages are not explained clearly. Here is how to think about it.
The Standard ‘1+X’ Model
Chinese health screening packages follow a 1+X structure. The ‘1’ is a mandatory core: complete blood count, fasting glucose, lipid profile, liver and kidney function, urinalysis, blood pressure, and a physician examination. The ‘X’ is what you add on — imaging, specialist consults, tumor markers, advanced labs.
The cheapest tier is often just the ‘1’. Everything worth paying for is in the ‘X’.
Match the Package to Your Age
Under 35
Standard tier. The core labs plus a chest X-ray and abdominal ultrasound. You want a baseline to compare against in a few years, not deep imaging.
35 to 50
Add low-dose chest CT (far more sensitive than X-ray for early lung findings), coronary calcium scoring, and an expanded tumor marker panel. This is the group where early detection starts to matter.
Over 50
Executive tier plus endoscopy. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy are the highest-yield tests in this age group and cannot be substituted with blood work. Plan for a two-day visit.
Match the Package to Your History
- Smoker or ex-smoker: chest CT is non-negotiable regardless of age
- Family history of heart disease: coronary calcium scoring plus echocardiogram
- Family history of colorectal cancer: colonoscopy, do not wait for a screening package
- Diabetic or pre-diabetic: add HbA1c, retinal imaging, and renal function
What Not to Pay For
A few items rarely add clinical value at normal population risk: full-body PET scans as routine screening, most genetic panels sold to healthy people, and ‘immune function’ or ‘oxidative stress’ tests that lack a standardized clinical interpretation. Spend that money on better imaging instead.
Confirm Before You Book
Ask for: an itemized list of every test included, the hospital’s accreditation tier, report language, report turnaround time, and whether biopsies or pathology are billed separately.
