Tcm and wellness
Traditional Chinese medicine is practised widely in China, and for travellers it works best as something you plan deliberately rather than a detour. Acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion and herbal medicine are the most commonly sought services, offered in settings from university hospital TCM departments to private clinics. Choose by setting rather than by reputation alone. A TCM department attached to a hospital tends to be integrated with conventional diagnostics, which can be useful if you are already in China for another reason. Private clinics vary widely in structure and record-keeping, so ask where practitioners are registered and whether treatment notes are written in a form you can review. Herbal medicine deserves the most care. Prescriptions are individualised and can run for several weeks, and ingredients may interact with medications you already take. Bring a full medication list to the consultation and discuss it, ask whether your own physician should review the prescription, and check the rules for carrying compounded medicine across borders before you leave. Set realistic expectations. No credible practitioner will claim to diagnose or treat a serious condition without assessment, and this site does not make such claims. If you are using TCM alongside ongoing treatment, plan to tell both your home physician and the treating practitioner. Treat a first visit as an assessment: ask what they plan to do, how long it takes and what follow-up is included.
Many patients do, typically for supportive or wellness purposes alongside conventional care. Tell both the TCM practitioner and your treating physician about what you are taking, and ask the practitioner to review your current medication list during the consultation.
An assessment first: questioning about symptoms and history, and in many cases pulse and tongue observation, followed by a plan for treatment. Ask how long the plan runs, what each session involves and whether follow-up is included before you commit to a course.
