Language is the most common friction point in China medical care and the most fixable. The realistic picture is that English ability varies enormously by hospital, department and individual clinician, so planning should assume that interpretation will be needed for anything beyond routine administrative communication. Decide where language support is actually required. Booking, registration, payment and scheduling may be handled by a bilingual desk. A specialist consultation, a procedure briefing and the explanation of results are clinical conversations where a medical interpreter is the standard approach, and they are different skills. Ask who provides the interpreter, whether they are credentialed for medical settings, and whether they attend in person or on video. For documents, agree the format before you travel. Discharge summaries, imaging reports and lab panels are routinely issued in Chinese, an English version may need to be requested separately, and you may want it certified if your insurer or physician requires it. Ask how long translation takes and what is included. Preparing on your side reduces the load. Write a one-page English summary of your history, current medications, allergies and prior procedures, and bring the original reports. Bring a short list of questions too. This gives the interpreter clear material and makes the consultation more efficient for everyone.
Not necessarily. Registration and payment can often be handled by a bilingual desk, but clinical conversations such as a specialist consultation or a procedure briefing are best handled with a medical interpreter. Confirm the arrangement for each appointment before it happens.
Reports are usually issued in Chinese first, and an English version may need to be requested separately. If your insurer or home physician requires a certified translation, say so before you leave so it can be included in the plan rather than arranged later.
